BLOOD PRESSURE
How high is your blood pressure? About ten million people in the UK have high blood pressure, yet according to a survey by the Stroke Association, 60% of people have no idea what their blood pressure is. High blood pressure doesn’t usually cause symptoms, but it can have profound effects on your health and can increase the risk of heart attack or stroke. It can also cause kidney failure and blindness. Everyone should have their blood pressure checked at least once every three years. If the level is high (above 135/85) then take action to reduce it by losing excess weight, eating less fat and more fruit and veg, cutting down on salt and taking more exercise. Just small lifestyle changes now could keep you healthier and more active when you’re older.

SELENIUM
With the current intake of selenium so low – we take in only half our daily requirement of this potent anti-cancer mineral – everyone should consider ways of improving their intake. If breast cancer runs in your family, upping your consumption is vital, according to a new study at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Research reveals that woman with a genetic predisposition to breast cancer metabolise selenium differently from other women, further increasing their selenium needs. Added benefits: Selenium helps neutralise free radicals, which trigger collagen-attacking enzymes. Found in Brazil nuts, fresh tuna and prawns. Daily dose 75 micrograms (mcg).
